Chapter Eighteen

Jordan was tired as he slipped into the bunk on the bus. It was late. They’d be driving overnight to Rochester, NY. They had a radio interview and other publicity obligations in the mid-morning. To be fully rested, they were expected to get some shut-eye on the drive. The bunk of the bus was cramped. He always had a hard time getting comfortable with his knees bent. He pulled out his phone to plug it into the charger that dangled from a USB port in the ceiling. Above him, Dani shifted around, trying to get comfortable too.

“You okay up there?” He asked, sliding his privacy curtain open. Heath was already snoring in the bunk across from him. A glow from Tyler’s phone illuminated his silhouette in his bunk, across from Dani’s.

“Yeah,” she grumbled. “It takes me a night or two to reacclimate to the tiny space. I’m going to turn on my rain noises. Hopefully, that will put me out.”

He saw a momentary glow from her bunk too as she slid in her earbuds and tried to settle. He slid the curtain closed again and looked at his phone screen. He’d had a missed call from Kyle, and a have a great show text from Dylan. He knew he needed to call Kyle back, but it was late. He clicked the text message button instead.

[YOU] Just got settled on the bus, headed to Rochester. Did you need to talk?

[YOU] Sorry I missed your call.

A minute later, Kyle’s face appeared along with options to answer or reject a call. He clicked accept and brought the phone to his ear.

“It’s late.” He tried to keep his voice low. “What’s up?”

“I wanted to check on you. I didn’t get to see you off this morning.”

“You were busy,” Jordan reminded him. “You’ll come see me right away when I get back.”

Kyle groaned. “That’s weeks away. How am I supposed to get my fix of you now?”

“I’m not taking nudes for you.”

“I don’t want your nudes,” he scoffed. “Well...I wouldn’t turn them down, but I’m not soliciting them.”

Jordan chuckled. “What did you do today?”

“Worked on a commission, then had dinner with Jack and Markus. We helped Jack unpack the rest of his stuff. Hung out at his new place.” There was a moment of silence. “We got to know Dylan a little.”

“Is that good or bad?”

“He seems...” Kyle hesitated over his word choice. “He seems like he’s struggling.”

“Agreed,” Jordan acknowledged. “He was gone for a long time. Sobriety isn’t always what it’s cracked up to be. He’s constantly judged based on his wealth and his past. He wants to be independent, and yet he’s tracked every minute of every day. I’m surprised he’s doing as well as he is.”

“He seems to have a good head on his shoulders,” Kyle continued.

“Does that mean you like him?” Jordan asked. “I mean like him?”

“No. I can see why you do. He is attractive. A little broken. For me, it’s more that I want to wrap him up in a cozy blanket and tell him that everything is going to be okay.
